Cancelled Cheque in the UAE: What It Is, How to Make One, and When It's Needed
Quick answer
What a cancelled cheque is for
Institutions asking for a cancelled cheque want one thing: your bank details in a form that cannot be mistyped. A cheque leaf carries the account holder name, account number and IBAN, and the bank's identifiers pre-printed by the bank itself, so a photocopy-proof source document beats a hand-filled form. Common UAE requests:
- Employment onboarding: payroll and WPS (Wage Protection System) salary transfer setup, where the employer's bank needs your exact account details
- Loan, auto finance and credit card applications
- Auto-debit mandates: utilities, telecom, insurance premiums, gym and school payment plans
- Refunds and deposits back: landlords, RTA, service providers returning money to a verified account
- Investment and brokerage account funding verification
The cancelled cheque proves the account exists and belongs to the named person; it is identification, not payment.
How to make a cancelled cheque correctly
- Take a fresh leaf from your current cheque book for the account whose details you are sharing.
- Draw two parallel lines diagonally across the face.
- Write "CANCELLED" clearly between the lines, in block letters, without covering the printed account number, IBAN or the MICR band at the bottom.
- Do not sign it. No date, no payee, no amount, no signature. An unsigned cancelled leaf cannot be turned into a payment instrument.
- Record the leaf number in your register as cancelled, so the numbering gap is explained.
- Hand it only to the requesting institution, ideally with the purpose noted on the back if they permit ("For salary transfer setup, [company], [date]").
What a cancelled cheque cannot do
It cannot withdraw money, it cannot be deposited, and it does not authorize anything by itself; mandates still need the actual mandate form. Conversely, know what it also does not protect against: the leaf shows your genuine account number and IBAN, so treat it like any bank document, share it only with institutions that need it, and never send it to unverified requesters. Fraud in the UAE frequently starts with harvested account details.
Alternatives UAE institutions accept
If you are out of leaves or the account has no cheque book, most institutions accept: an IBAN letter or account confirmation letter from your bank (downloadable in most UAE banking apps within minutes), a bank statement header showing name and IBAN, or the bank app's account-details screen for informal verification. The IBAN letter is the modern default; the cancelled cheque persists because it requires no bank interaction at all.
For businesses: cancelled leaves are register events
A business cancels leaves constantly: spoiled cheques, changed payments, security cheques returned and destroyed. Every cancelled leaf should exist in the register with its number and reason, because an unexplained numbering gap is an audit question and an unrecorded missing leaf is a risk. ChequePro records cancellations alongside issues automatically, so the Chequebook Report always explains every leaf: used, cancelled, or remaining. Cheque printing software for the UAE

- No. Never sign it. The absence of a signature is part of what makes it unusable as payment.
